Status Pro X review: Angular looks, well-rounded sound?

With the Status Pro X, Status Audio is launching an in-ear system that is clearly aimed at demanding users. The focus is not on eye-catching design or marketing, but on sound quality, build quality and extensive customisation options.

Verdict in brief

The Status Pro X deliver a well-rounded package for demanding users who value audio quality and customisation. If you just want to listen to music, you will find cheaper alternatives.

The manufacturer, Status Audio, is a comparatively small audio company from New York in the United States. It deliberately positions itself away from the big brands. Its focus is on sound tuning, technical execution and customisation rather than strong branding or lifestyle marketing.

Status Audio specifically targets users who take a closer interest in audio and want to shape the sound themselves. The extensive equalizer and the various sound profiles of the Status Pro X fit that approach. Reviews and user reports repeatedly point out that the manufacturer is less interested in mass appeal and more in a technically minded audience.

This concept is reflected in the product itself. The Status Pro X clearly prioritise function, customisation and sound quality, while design and brand presentation are deliberately understated.

Their price places the earbuds in the premium segment. Expectations regarding sound, build quality and features are correspondingly high.

The test therefore did not focus only on first impressions. What mattered was everyday use: connection stability, operation, app features and, above all, acoustic performance under real conditions. The aim is a practical assessment that shows who the Status Pro X are really worth it for and where their limitations lie.

Packaging

The packaging of the Status Pro X makes a high-quality impression right from the start. The outer box is sturdy and stands out clearly from simple standard packaging thanks to an embossed product image. The embossing is neatly executed and underlines the premium aspiration.

This impression continues inside. The components are arranged in a structured, clear way. The charging case takes centre stage, with the accessories neatly stored separately.

The combination of an embossed outer box and a clearly structured interior creates a coherent overall impression and underlines the positioning in the upper price segment.

Design and build quality

The Status Pro X belong in the premium segment, and that becomes clear the moment you pick up the charging case. It is made of aluminium, feels sturdy, is cleanly finished and makes a high-quality impression. The gaps are even; nothing rattles or feels cheap.

In everyday use, however, a typical side effect of this choice of material becomes apparent: the surface visibly attracts fingerprints. That matters visually, but is technically irrelevant.

The case itself opens and closes cleanly. The earbuds sit firmly in the charging cradle. The contacts are recessed and therefore protected, which reduces the risk of dirt or contact problems.

The earbuds are deliberately kept simple. Their rectangular shape is striking. There is neither branding nor playful design elements; the focus is clearly on function. Several microphones and combined control surfaces for touch and physical input are integrated into the earbuds.

What's in the box

The scope of delivery is complete and practical.

  • Charging case with earbuds
  • Silicone ear tips in several sizes
  • USB-C to USB-C cable
  • Documentation

The different tip sizes are crucial, because sound and noise cancelling depend directly on the fit in the ear. In the test, switching sizes led to a much better fit and a noticeably different sound.

Setup and connection

Setup is quick and uneventful. As soon as the case is opened, the smartphone detects the earbuds.

The test showed a very short connection time. After opening the case, reconnection consistently took about three seconds.

Bluetooth 5.3 ensures a stable connection. There were no dropouts, even when moving around or indoors.

Disconnecting is just as reliable. Once the earbuds are placed back in the case, the connection is ended cleanly.

Controls and app

The controls combine touch input with physical elements. This is a practical solution that reduces accidental inputs.

  • A single tap starts or pauses the music.
  • A double tap skips the track.
  • Press and hold adjusts the volume.
  • Left and right can be assigned separately.

Response time is short and inputs are recognised reliably.

The Status Audio app plays a central role. Compared with many other manufacturers, it offers a significantly wider range of functions.

  • Several sound profiles, including Signature and Audiophile
  • Special modes for speech and podcasts
  • Individually savable equalizers
  • Firmware updates directly via the app

The app, too, deserves to be highlighted as a strength of the system. That was my impression in the test: the customisation options go beyond standard solutions.

Comfort

The ergonomic design works in everyday use. The earbuds sit securely and do not create any unpleasant pressure.

Choosing the right tip size is important. In the test, switching from medium to a larger size resulted in a much better fit.

Sound quality

The Status Pro X rely on a 12-millimetre dynamic driver. Combined with the software, the result is a clear focus on sound quality.

The test revealed high detail resolution with clearly traceable structures in the sound. Frequencies are cleanly separated, so individual instruments and voices remain easy to distinguish. The mids sound precise and present, while the bass stays controlled and does not push itself to the fore. Overall, the result is a balanced sound without any artificial emphasis on individual ranges. At least, that was my impression.

The Audiophile setting is aimed at users who prefer neutral reproduction. The sound is balanced and detailed, and the strength of the tuning shows especially with complex pieces of music.

The ability to create your own equalizer presets significantly broadens the range of use.

Active noise cancelling and ambient mode

Active noise cancelling works effectively without creating a strong feeling of pressure, which is a clear advantage in everyday use. Ambient noise is attenuated evenly and pleasantly. There is no disturbing sense of being shut off, as is the case with some other systems. Operation remains stable, with no audible artefacts or side effects.

An ambient mode is available and can be adjusted in several levels. Although ambient sounds are let in, your own voice sounds muffled and overall perception is limited. This impression is, of course, subjective.

Microphones

The built-in microphones, on the other hand, deliver solid results. Speech remains intelligible and background noise is reduced. Performance is sufficient for phone calls. In loud environments or for more demanding applications, however, the system reaches its limits.

Drivers and acoustic system

The Status Pro X use a triple-driver system that sets them clearly apart from conventional in-ear headphones with only one driver. A 12-millimetre dynamic driver is combined with two balanced armature drivers from Knowles.

The dynamic driver handles the low frequencies and provides controlled, clean bass without excessive emphasis. The balanced armature drivers are responsible for mids and highs and enable more precise, finer resolution in these ranges.

Together, they are meant to create a differentiated sound with clear separation of frequencies. Details should be rendered cleanly without individual ranges dominating. My impression was that the advantage of this design shows especially with complex pieces of music, as individual elements stay better separated from one another.

A driver concept like this is otherwise more likely to be found in even more expensive or specialised audio products, and it underlines the Status Pro X's clear focus on sound quality.

Battery life and everyday use

Battery life is on par with current premium in-ears. A single charge provides several hours of playback, and the charging case supplies additional charging cycles. Besides charging via USB-C, the case also supports wireless charging to the Qi standard. Actual runtime varies depending on usage and enabled features such as noise cancelling.

In everyday use, the Status Pro X work reliably. The connection is established quickly, operation is responsive and sound quality remains consistently high.

The earbuds can be used for gaming or with consoles. In these scenarios, however, the added value over cheaper models is limited, as key app features cannot be used.

Value for money

At around 299 euros, the Status Pro X sit in the upper price segment. Whether the price is justified depends heavily on how you use them. For music lovers who value sound quality and individual customisation, the price is understandable. For simple everyday use, on the other hand, it seems too high. The price is justified if the available features are actively used.

Conclusion

The Status Pro X are consistently designed for sound quality and customisation. The test shows a clear focus on acoustic performance, supported by a well-thought-out software concept. Build quality, connection and operation work reliably and without issues in everyday use.

Their greatest strength lies in the sound. The combination of a dynamic driver and balanced armature technology ensures clean frequency separation and high detail resolution. Together with the app, the result is a system that can be tailored to individual listening habits. The wide range of equalizer options and sound profiles clearly sets this model apart from many competitors.

Technically, too, the overall package is convincing. The connection is established quickly and remains stable. Operation is precise, and the build quality is on a level appropriate to the price.

Weaknesses show mainly in the details. The aluminium case looks premium, but is prone to fingerprints in everyday use. The price of around 299 euros also requires a clear decision about the intended use.

The Status Pro X are therefore not aimed at casual users. If you just want to listen to music, you will find cheaper alternatives. But if you specifically value sound quality and actively use the app's possibilities, you get a technically strong and well-thought-out system.

All in all, the Status Pro X deliver a well-rounded package for demanding users who value audio quality and customisation.
